McCusker was born at Bellshill 15 May 1973 in Glasgow, Scotland, to an Irish mother who was adamant that he learn to play the fiddle starting at the age of seven. McCusker was a regular participant in local youth orchestras and ceilidh groups and was part of the group Parcel O’Rogues (named after Robert Burns’ Sic a Parcel of Rogues in a Nation) along with a group of schoolmates at the age of fourteen. A few years later the band quit his place in the Royal Scottish Academy in Glasgow to tour the country together with the Battlefield Band.

When Michael McNamara’s bassist presented John McCusker and Simon Fowler of Ocean Colour Scene to one another, Fowler subsequently presented him with the BBC Radio 2 folk musician of the year prize in 2003. McCusker has performed live on several occasions with the Birmingham band. In 2012 McCusker appeared on Fowler’s “Merrymouth album. He also joined the group for their UK tour.

After a 6-month world tour with Mark Knopfler, McCusker released a new record along with Orcadian singer Kris Drever and Idlewild front man, Roddy Woomble. The album Before the Ruin was released in September 2008, and features members of Teenage Fanclub, Radiohead, Michael McGoldrick and Heidi Talbot.

In 2014, McCusker once again appeared on Fowlers solo project, now called Merrymouth, brand new album ‘Wenlock Hill’. The album also features a guest appearance from Chas Hodges from Chas and Dave

McCusker has been recognized for years for his ability to transcend the boundaries of music. In his live and studio performer, McCusker has performed on stages with Bonnie Raitt, Patti Smith, Steve Earle, Rosanne Cash, Paolo Nutini and Jools Holland. He’s also recorded of Mark Knopfler, Paul Weller, Teenage Fanclub, Ocean Colour Scene and many others. Television and film work includes music for the film Heartlands (2002) and Billy Connolly’s World Tour of New Zealand and the Jennifer Saunders sitcom Jam & Jerusalem. The most recent album of his solo career called Goodnight Ginger is out now in 2003. McCusker was awarded his Spirit of Scotland award for music in 2001, and was named his award for BBC Radio 2 folk musician of the year in 2003.
