He attended school through Terenure College. He pursued a degree in History in University College Dublin, where he was a member of UCD L&H. UCD L&H. He subsequently went to his first King’s Inns. He was admitted by the Law Society in the year 1975 and was made a Senior Counsel in the year 1991. He was a member of the council in the Free Legal Advice Centres while studying. While working in a FLAC center in Tallaght He spoke with her mother who is the plaintiff’s wife who was the plaintiff in State (Healy) (Healy) v Donoghue. The final case gave the constitutional right of legal assistance in criminal cases.
He was appointed Judge on the High Court in 2004 on the same day that he was appointed as future Supreme Court colleagues Frank Clarke and Elizabeth Dunne. He was the chief judge of the judicial review process and constitutional cases. He was a judge on the Special Criminal Court from 2009. At the close of his term on the High Court he was the Chief Judge of the Minor’s List, dealing with difficult cases that involved children.
He married Lia O’Hegarty, a lawyer, in 2004 in Rome. They have one daughter.
In January 2020, he marched in Warsaw, Poland, with other senior judges from across Europe arising out of issues surrounding the 2015 Polish Constitutional Court crisis. He carried letters of solidarity from the Association of Judges of Ireland.
He was previously involved with Fine Gael, working as speechwriter for Taoiseach Garret FitzGerald. He was also a leading advisor to Michael Noonan in Michael Noonan’s 2001 Irish general elections.

John Eoin MacMenamin (born 14 November 1952) is an Irish judge who has been serving as a Judge in the Supreme Court of Ireland since February 2012. He was previously an Judge of the High Court from 2004 to 2012.
He was the Chairman of the Bar Council from 1997 to 1999. In his time it was noted that there was a rise in the costs incurred by barristers participating of the scheme for criminal legal assistance in the wake of a dispute between barristers and the government. He was on the VHI’s board VHI between 1995 between 1995 and 1997.
He was appointed to the Supreme Court in March 2012.
