John Luther Adams is one of the most popular and richest Composer who was born on January 23, 1953 in Meridian, Mississippi, United States. John Luther Adams (born January 23rd 1953) is an American composer who’s music is influenced by nature, specifically the natural landscapes of Alaska in which he was a resident from 1978 until 2014. (Garland 2007). The orchestral composition Become Ocean was awarded the 2014 Pulitzer Prize for Music (Huizenga 2014).

In 2014, Adams received his Pulitzer Prize for Music for his orchestral work Become Ocean, which Alex Ross from The New Yorker called “the loveliest apocalypse in musical history” (Ross 2013, 92). It was first performed at the end of 2013, by Ludovic Morlot as well as The Seattle Symphony and performed by the same conductor and orchestra during the 2013 Spring For Music music festival at Carnegie Hall. Adams has never been to Carnegie Hall before hearing his work performed to a sell-out audience (Fonseca-Wollheim 2014.). The surround-sound album of Become Ocean on Cantaloupe Music debuts at #1 on the Billboard Traditional Classical Chart, and remained there for a total of two weeks, and then went on to be awarded the Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Classical Composition (Davis and Adams 2014). All of his work is available from Taiga Press (BMI) and is available through Theodore Front Musical Literature (n.d.)

In October 2015, Adams received the William Schuman Award from Columbia University. The events surrounding the award included a series of concerts of his music at the Miller Theater, including Clouds of Forgetting, Clouds of Unknowing, For Lou Harrison, and In the White Silence (Oestreich 2015).

His more recent works include, Across the Distance, for a large number of horns, was premiered on the 5th of July, 2015 at the Cambo estate in Fife, Scotland as part of the East Neuk Festival. His recording of Ilimaq (“spirit journeys”), a solo work for percussion, played by art-music percussionist, composer, and Wilco drummer Glenn Kotche, was released in October 2015 (Clements 2015). A combination of contemporary classical music, Alaskan field recordings, and found sounds from the natural world, it evokes the travels of a shaman riding the sound of a drum to and from the spirit world (Sigler 2012).

Its work Sila Breath of the Earth, is”air element “air element,” following the depiction that water is in Become Ocean as well as it also represents the “earth element” in Inuksuit which is an outdoor percussion piece (Patner 2012). The music he plays, he states represents “our awareness of the world in which we live and the world’s awareness of us” (Friedman 2014).

In Meridian, Mississippi, Adams began playing the drums in his teens as drummers in rock bands. He went to an institution called the California Institute of the Arts as an undergraduate in the late 1970s, where he studied with James Tenney and Leonard Stein graduating in the year 1973 (Kosman 2001). After graduation, Adams began work in the field of environmental protection. Through the work Adams first traveled to Alaska in the year 1975. Adams made the move back to Alaska in 1978, and stayed there until the year 2014. The musician now divides all of his days between New York and the Sonoran desert in Mexico (Service 2015) however, Adams’ time living in Alaska remains an influence on the music he composes (Garland 2007). From 1982 until 1989 he was a timpanist and principal percussionist in the Fairbanks Symphony Orchestra and the Arctic Chamber Orchestra (Kosman 2001)

Adams’ compositions span a variety of media and genres. He has composed music for film, television as well as children’s theater and voice, as well as acoustic instruments and orchestra, as well as electronic devices. From 1998 to 2002 Adams was an the Associate Professor of Composition for the Oberlin Conservatory of Music.
