John Henry Lanchester (born 25 February 1962) is a British novelist and journalist. Born in Hamburg and was raised in Hong Kong and educated in England between 1972 and the year 1980 at Gresham’s School in Holt, Norfolk before transferring to St John’s College, Oxford. His wife is author and historian Miranda Carter, with whom have two children living in London.

The memoir Family Romance (2007) recounts the story of his motherwho was a nun who was kicked out of the convent and changed her name, changed her age and then concealed the truth from her son and husband until her demise.

Lanchester wrote the introduction to a 2012 edition of Empire of the Sun by J.G. Ballard, an author he resonates with.

In 2012 he published the novel Capital; this was adapted into a three-part TV serial for BBC 1, first broadcast on 24 November 2015. In 2013 he was invited by The Guardian to examine materials from Edward Snowden, and on 4 October wrote “The Snowden files: why the British public should be worried about GCHQ.”
