The son of writer and artist William John (‘Bill’) Hooper (“Raff”) (1916-1996 ), John Hooper was educated at St Benedict’s School in London as well as St Catharine’s College, Cambridge. When he was in his freshman year at the university Hooper travelled to Biafra, the state of Biafra, which was in the process of becoming a break Biafra to aid in the making of a documentary on television about Biafra’s involvement in the Nigerian Civil war.

In 2015, Hooper published The Italians, a portrait of the Italian people and their culture.

In 1976, following the death of Spain’s dictator Francisco Franco, Hooper was invited by Guardian to be its correspondent in Madrid. For the next 3 years, the reporter reported on the transition of Spain between dictatorship and democracy. Then, he returned to Madrid as a correspondent to The Observer, Guardian and Economist in 1988. He remained until 1994. In the time between he was a member of the London staff of the Guardian and, from 1984 until 1988, he was a host of The BBC World Service programme, Twenty Four Hours.
