John Harwood (born November 5 1956) is an American journalist who is working in the capacity of White House Correspondent for CNN in January 2020. In the past, he was editor-at-large of CNBC. He was the principal Washington correspondent for CNBC and also a contributor to The New York Times. The column he wrote was called “The Caucus” that appeared on Mondays about Washington politics and policies. Prior to joining the Times the columnist wrote in The Wall Street Journal.

Harwood’s dad, Richard Harwood, was an editor and reporter in The Louisville Times and The Washington Post. In John Harwood’s story on The Washington Post (April 30 2000 page B4) Harwood’s mother was a prominent campaigner during Kennedy’s presidential run Robert F. Kennedy in 1968. Harwood aged 11 was featured in a commercial on television for Kennedy’s 1968 presidential campaign.

Harwood graduated from Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School, where he edited the school newspaper, The Tattler. (Harwood was the commencement speaker for the high school’s graduating class of 2010.) While in high school, Harwood served as a copy boy for the Washington Star, his first journalism job.

Harwood was a moderator for CNBC’s Republican primary presidential debate on October 28, 2015. Harwood was criticized by both the debate candidates and the media for his performance as moderator.

Harwood was appointed his White House correspondent for the Wall Street Journal in 1991 and covered his coverage of the George H. W. Bush administration. Then, he was an Capitol Hill correspondent and, in 1997, the editor of politics and chief reporter for the newspaper’s political section. Harwood was named the the chief Washington reporter at CNBC in March of 2006.
