Prior to making the move to professional baseball, Gaub played at South St. Paul High School before transferring to his final school, the University of Minnesota. Gaub was initially selected to Minnesota’s Minnesota Twins out of high school in the 25th round of the 2003 amateur draft but he decided not to make a commitment. When he was selected in the 21st selection of the amateur draft of 2006 of Cleveland Indians Cleveland Indians, he did sign.
