John Filan is one of the most popular and richest Australian former football player who was born on February 8, 1970 in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. John Richard Filan (born 8 February 1970 in Sydney, Australia) is an Australian former professional footballer who is currently the assistant manager of League One side Shrewsbury Town.

He was signed by Wigan Athletic in December 2001 for a fee of P600,000. Prior to the beginning of the Wigan’s first campaign as a member of the Premier League he had missed only one game for Wigan, but was injured in the beginning of the 2005-06 season , with the club’s very own signing Mike Pollitt taking his place in the team. Filan however, signed a new contract that allowed him to remain at Wigan until the end of 2007. After he had completed his contract with Wigan the club, he was let go at the conclusion in the current season. While at Wigan the player was an extra at the time of the 2006 Football League Cup Final when Pollitt was forced to leave during the first half due to an injury. Also, he is remembered for securing the goal of a Nolberto Solano penalty during an 1-0 win against Newcastle United in February 2007.

Filan was appointed as assistant manager to John Askey at League One side Shrewsbury Town in June 2018, having previously worked with Askey during his managerial tenure at Macclesfield Town.

He was a player with St. George Saints and Wollongong Wolves in the old National Soccer League in Australia before making the move into England in 1993 to sign with Cambridge United in 1993, after a disappointing test at Southampton. The year 1995 saw him joined Coventry City, then moved with Blackburn Rovers in 1997.

As as a player, he played as a goalkeeper between 1989 and 2008, and was particularly active during the Premier League for Coventry City who were a master at getting the ball away from the stadium under stress, Blackburn Rovers and Wigan Athletic and Wigan Athletic, who were also contracted but not having played for Nottingham Forest in England’s top division. In addition, he played for the Football League for Cambridge United and Doncaster Rovers, and in his country of origin with St. George Saints, Wollongong Wolves, and Sydney F.C.. He was also capped three times by Australia.

Filan was a part of the Australian team which competed in the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona and came in fourth spot. Since he holds an Irish passport due to his family, he has wanted to play international football for Ireland. The problem was that FIFA did not approve of it until February, 1999 due to the fact that he was a member of in the Australian Olympic team.

Filan returned to Australia in semi-retirement, resettling in his home town of Sydney. In August 2007 agreed terms with A-League side Sydney FC as backup to Clint Bolton, however the deal fell through citing outside issues.
