What did John Endler study?
Endler’s Discovery When evolutionary biologist John Endler began studying Trinidad’s wild guppies in the 1970s, he was struck by the wide variation among guppies from different streams, even among guppies living in different parts of the same stream.
What did guppies evolve from?
Over time, the guppies in places where pike cichlids ate adults evolved to have as many babies as possible earlier in their lifetimes. Guppies in places where killifish ate babies evolved in an opposite way – they had fewer, larger babies later in life.
When was John Endler born?
Born in Montreal in 1947.
What happened when Dr John Endler transferred predatory fish to the
regions with more colorful male guppies?
When Dr. Endler transferred predatory fish to the regions with brightly colored male guppies, selection acted rapidly to produce a population of duller males. This demonstrates that persistent variation within a population provides the raw material for rapid evolution when environmental conditions change.
What hypothesis was Endler testing with this experiment What did he expect
to find if his hypothesis was supported?
Endler’s hypothesis was that predators are responsible for much of this variation among populations. He had noticed that guppies sharing their stream with predatory cichlids had fewer spots than guppies living with Rivulus. Cichlids are ravenous predators of adult guppies. Rivulus eat only juvenile guppies.
