In 2009, de Rantau collaborated with Nugroho on Generasi Biru (Blue Generation) which was a fictionalized biopic about the group Slank. In 2010 de Rantau and Damien Dematra made a film that was a fictionalized version of US President Barack Obama’s early years located in Menteng, Central Jakarta. The film was titled Obama Anak Menteng (Obama the child of Menteng) the film was a remake of the novel by Dematra of the same title. The film was criticized for its inaccuracy and portraying the family as using a transvestite maid.
His next movie, Denias Senandung The film, Denias Senandung Atas Awan (Denias singing on the Cloud), was released in 2006. It was a story about an infant Papuan child who has to overcome prejudice to get an education. The film received numerous awards among them Best Children’s Feature Film at the Asia Pacific Screen Awards. The film was also entered into the 80th Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film but the film did not receive a nomination.

John de Rantau (born 2 January 1970) is an Indonesian film director. Films he made Denias Senandung Di Atas Awan (Denias, Singing on the Cloud) was Indonesia’s entry for the 80th Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film, but was not nominated.
De Rantau made his featured film debut in 2005 in Mencari Madonna (Looking for Madonna) is a documentary about the story of a Papuan teenager who is diagnosed with AIDS and searches for a cure. The script is written by Garin Nugroho who also directed the film. The film was planned to be submitted to a variety of film festivals, such as those of the Singapore International Film Festival and Shanghai International Film Festival, however, it was rejected because it was in digital format and not 35mm, as is required.
De Rantau released his fourth film, entitled Semesta Mendukung (The Universe Supports), in October 2011. Inspired by Yohanes Surya, trainer of Indonesia’s International Physics Olympiad team, the film followed a young Madurese child named Arief who searches for his mother through the Olympiad. After Mestakung, he directed the serial Keluarga Minus (Minus’ Family), which starred Minus Karoba; de Rantau had been helping Karoba’s career since the latter appeared in Mencari Madonna and Denias.
