Liu was born in Nashville, Tennessee, United States as the child of an Chinese father and an American mother. Liu spent the majority of his life at Bloomington, Indiana. Liu studied journalism. In 1979, he travelled for his first trip to China after being forced by his dad to visit his grandmother prior to her death. In China Liu was instrumental in the establishment of China’s CBS News bureau in Beijing in 1981, a period when tensions between United States and China were diminishing. Liu was employed by CBS for over 10 years as a cameraman, director and cameraman. Liu says that after the fall of the Soviet Union he grew tired of journalism and decided to create films. He began with European media, such as RAI, SRG SSR, ZDF For RAI, ZDF, BBC World and National Geographic Channel he produced documentary films about nature. In 1995, he documented his first documentary, the Loess Plateau in China, that was converted from an barren, erosion-prone ground into an oasis by the Chinese government. At this moment, Liu saw humankind’s potential for helping to restore ecosystems instead of destruction.

Liu left journalism in 1997 and was director for the Environmental Education Media Project (EEMP). Through the EEMP Liu makes use of television to inform people on sustainable development, ecology as well as public health issues in China as well as other nations. Liu stresses that the detrimental effects of humans on the earth is not solely due to greenhouse gases, but much more influenced by the degrading of organic matter, biomass and biodiversity. Liu says that the decrease in these aspects has resulted in rising temperatures and the loss of arable soils, ultimately final result leading to desertification. Liu thinks there is a solution to these issues in the way that people consider money, since consumers value products and services that come from ecosystems more than those ecosystems. The episode Regreening the desert/ Green gold from the series Tegenlicht was broadcast by Dutch television station VPRO and produced by Liu. The show follows Liu travelling around the world to destinations such as Jordan, China and Ethiopia and demonstrates the potential of the re-greening of desert areas. In the 65th Prix Italia, in September 2013, the show won the Special Prize Expo 2015. From 2009 onwards, Liu has been working alongside Willem Ferwerda, former director of the Dutch office of IUCN as executive fellow in ecosystems and business in the Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University, and founder of the Commonland Foundation an organization that manages large-scale landscape restoration projects using the business model that is based on the four results from the landscape restoration framework that was developed by Ferwerda. John Liu founded Ecosystem Restoration Camps in the year 2017, an international movement that seeks to repair damaged ecosystems on a huge extent.
