Following his college years Coughran was selected by his home at the University of California, in the fifth round of the 1973 NBA draft, which included the 74th pick overall with the Cleveland Cavaliers. He was a player as a member of the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a member of the Golden State Warriors, during the 1979-1980 season.
He also played in Spain’s highest league at the highest level known as that of the Primera Division, where he was the league’s top scoring player during the 1973-74 season. As a player for Real Madrid, he won the FIBA European Champions Cup (EuroLeague) championship in 1977-78 season. In the same season with Real Madrid, he also won the 1976, 1977 as well as 1978 versions of the FIBA Intercontinental Cup.
