In a 2014 unanimous decision of the Eight-Judge First Senate on abolishing a law that allowed companies to be passed on from generation to generation tax- free, Masing – alongside fellow members Reinhard Gaier and Susanne Baer – handed down an additional decision that said the decision should have contained the language to ensure that the revised tax laws did not undermine the fundamental objective of inheritance law which was to stop the the excessive accumulation of wealth by the elite few: “The inheritance tax serves not just to generate tax revenue. It also serves as an instrument used by the state to stop the accumulation of wealth passed down from generation to generation only due to origin or personal connections.”
