He is a divorced father of one son, who was born in 1988. His present partner has been Susanne Riess.

At 22, he was diagnosed with cancer and until 1999, he had three relapses.

Since 2004 Hahn has been Chairman of the Austrian People’s Party in Vienna and, as such, was the party frontrunner in the October 2005 regional elections in which an increase in votes for the ÖVP (and a slight loss in votes for the FPÖ) made the ÖVP the second strongest party in the regional parliament, with 18 seats.

Hahn received his doctorate in philosophy at The University of Vienna in 1987. In May 2007, media researcher Stefan Weber accused Hahn of copying pages of his PhD thesis from different books , without properly citing them. The plagiarism claim was not verified by an expert panel from the University of Zurich that looked into the issue. Other academics have disputed this conclusion. It was reported that the University of Vienna looked into the issue but chose not to begin an examination, noting that Hahn has never presented “other people’s intellectual property” as his own. A new accusation of plagiarism surfaced in February of 2011, in the event that Austrian Green Member of Parliament Peter Pilz commissioned Stefan Weber to revise Hahn’s PhD thesis. The end of May 2011 the expert group released its findings, which included the plagiarism cases in 76 that together comprise at minimum 17.2 percent of Hahn’s dissertation. Hahn dismissed the accusations and said they proved to be “politically motivated, hardly surprising and not relevant.” In April of 2011 Hahn’s University of Vienna asked the Austrian Agency for Research Integrity to look into Hahn’s dissertation. The university in November 2011 issued an official statement stating that, according to the university’s view, Hahn’s doctoral thesis was not a case of plagiarism. The vice-chancellor at the university said the following “today, such a dissertation would not be accepted”. The agency’s decision was based on three reports from outside experts. It is not the case that neither the Agency for Research Integrity nor the University of Vienna would reveal the identities of the three external experts.
