Joel Selvin (born February 14 1950) is an American music critic based in San Francisco and author who is best known by his weekly columns in the San Francisco Chronicle which ran from 1972 until 2009. Selvin is the author of several books about different aspects of pop music, including the No. #1 New York Times best-seller Red My Uncensored Life in Rock with Sammy Hagar. He has also interviewed numerous musicians. Selvin has written for Rolling Stone, the Los Angeles Times, Billboard, and Melody Maker, and has composed liner notes for numerous recorded albums. Selvin has appeared in documentaries on the music scene , and has performed on stage as an aspiring rock and roll musician.
Selvin was among the first members of Rock Bottom Remainders, a rock and roll group comprised entirely of writers who have published their work. Their first appearance in public occurred in. Selvin was a one of “Critics Chorus” on one track from the band’s album Stranger Than Fiction, and was back with the chorus for a show at Bangor, Maine, in May 1998. The reviewer Kev Quigley was impressed by Selvin’s thirty-second singing, screaming jump in the band’s profane performance of “Louie Louie”.
Selvin wrote one of the chapters of the band’s book Mid-life Confidential: The Rock Bottom Remainders Tour America with Three Chords and an Attitude, published in 1994. Selvin said that “the magic of the Remainders is that they got to be a rock band—a royally treated rock band—without having to play like one.”
In 1994, Selvin began managing other pop music staff writers, directing and overseeing their assignments, and editing their contributions, all while continuing to contribute his own reports.
In the year 1990, Selvin published Ricky Nelson Idol for a Genre A biographie about Ricky Nelson which was nominated by Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI) for the Ralph J. Gleason Music Book Award. The book was later made into an TV film, titled Ricky Nelson: Original Teen Idol which was which was released in 1999.

Selvin was born in Berkeley, California. He has claimed that he did not finish the Berkeley High School class of 1967. Selvin moved into San Francisco and was hired as a copyboy at The San Francisco Chronicle. Selvin quickly snagged an entrance pass to an event at The Fillmore and then submitted his first work in The Chronicle’s Sunday Datebook in 1969. Selvin quit the Chronicle to pursue a brief unsuccessful attempt at the undergraduate program in The University of California, Riverside where he worked on the newspaper at the school. When he returned back to San Francisco, he wrote an analysis of First Step by the Faces for Rolling Stone, published in May 1970.
When the year 1972 began, Selvin became an assistant for Chronicle music writer John L. Wasserman, and began writing on both the weekly and Sunday paper issues, writing reviews of local events that featured rock and roll, as well as blues and rhythm performances. When Wasserman died in 1979 Selvin took over the reins of the Chronicle’s coverage of pop music. In the year following Selvin’s most notorious pieces covered Bob Dylan’s first performance at San Francisco after his conversion to Christianity. In his piece, titled “Bob Dylan’s God-Awful Gospel”, Selvin wrote:
