In the lead-up to the 2008-09 season, Byrom featured regularly in Northwich’s preseason games and scored two goals in a friendly match with the Manchester United reserves in August 2008. At the beginning of the season Byrom was a regular player in the middle of the midfield of Northwich. Byrom was responsible for both of Northwich’s goals in the victory of 2-1 at home against newly promoted Barrow in the first half of the season, and was also responsible for scoring at Kettering Town, a “25-yard drive into the top corner of the net”. He also was the creator of both the goals scored by Northwich in their victory in a game against Grays Athletic in October 2008. The problem was that Byrom suffered a hernia operation just after the club’s loss of 4-1 at Eastbourne Borough in December, making him inactive from the first team for a period of 10 weeks. The first team returned on February 9, 2009 and taking part in throughout the match in a 1-0 loss to Altrincham. It was his regular spot for the club until the final game of the season and recorded his second hat-trick in his career in the match against Rushden and Diamonds in a 4-2 win, but did not stop the Vics dropping out of to the Conference Premier in April 2009 despite winning the last six games in the campaign. Byrom’s final game for Northwich was the team’s 2-1 win away in Kassam Stadium. Kassam Stadium in the match against Oxford United. Byrom played 52 games in his brief time at Northwich and scored nine goals.

He attracted the interest of Northwich Victoria, who subsequently signed him for a small four-figure fee in January 2008. Byrom spent a year and a half at the Cheshire club, before joining Stevenage for a fee of £15,000 in May 2009 – helping them achieve promotion to the Football League for the first time in the club’s history. Byrom was also part of the Stevenage side that earned back-to-back promotions to League One during the 2010–11 season. He left Stevenage after three years and joined Preston North End in August 2012. During his time at Preston, he was loaned out to Oldham Athletic and Northampton respectively. The latter move was made permanent in January 2015, and he went on to be part of the side that secured promotion to League One during the 2015–16 season. Byrom joined Mansfield Town in December 2016 and spent a year-and-a-half there before being released in May 2018. A month later, he rejoined Stevenage.

Byrom was called up to the England C team in May 2009, for the International Challenge Trophy final against a Belgium U21 side. Byrom started the match, as England were beaten 1–0 at the Kassam Stadium.

Byrom can be described as a midfielder and is most at ease in the middle of the midfield. He’s left-footed, but the left-hand side isn’t his preferred position and he’s not often used as an wingsman. In 2007 Clitheroe chairman Carl Garner, said that Byrom is a player with “tremendous skill and potential” He added “Joel is an excellent player. He is able to accomplish things with the ball that players on television aren’t able to do.. As of May, 2009 Stevenage Manager Graham Westley believed that the signing of Byrom could “give the squad more balance” He also claimed that he has an “cultured left- foot” that enables him to penetrate defences of opposition. When he secured his signature Byrom, Westley said, “Joel is very creative going forward and is going to be one hell of a player. I was delighted to secure his signature as he is a real talent”. Dino Maamria has called Byrom a “creative midfielder”, as well as being able to open defenses. Byrom has said that he is “a good passer of the ball” in addition to being capable of “chip in with a few goals and generally get the team ticking over”. In March of 2010 after Stevenage’s 3-0 victory against Crawley Town the game that saw Byrom was able to score a goal close to the Crawley’s side, Westley stated that Byrom is a player with his “ability to score spectacular goals”.
