Joseph “Joe” Whelton (born on February 15, 1956) is a American professional basketball trainer. He was a basketball player in the University of Connecticut and has been coaching for the majority of his career in the United States.

In January of 2010 He was named the head trainer for the Lugano Tigers in Switzerland. While as head coach the Tigers were winners of the Swiss national championship in both 2010 and 2011 and also the cup title in the year 2011.

In the 2015-16 campaign, Whelton worked as head coach for the Liaoning Jiebao Hunters of the Chinese Basketball Association.

During Whelton’s tenure at Fribourg Olympic (1988-92), the club won a Swiss national championship. In 1992, he took over as head coach of another Swiss team, Pallacanestro Bellinzona, and led them to three straight national championships (1993, 1994, 1995) and four titles in the Swiss cup-competition (1993, 1994, 1995, 1996).

Then, in 1996, he went back the city of Manchester for a brief time and then relocated to Germany and served as the head coach for four teams within the Basketball Bundesliga: He coached Brandt Hagen in 1997-98, was the coach who led Rhondorfer TV to the Bundesliga semifinals in 1998-99, and had an eight- year stint with MTV Giessen (1999-2003) and was head coach of TBB Trier between 2003 and December 2007.

A resident of East Hartford, Connecticut, Whelton played for the University of Connecticut from 1974 until 1978. He started with his career as a coach with Wethersfield High School, followed by a stint as an assistant coach of the University of Hartford men’s basketball team.

At the age of 27, He became the head coach position in the Warrington Vikings in England, which later evolved into Manchester United Basketball. Whelton was the coach of his Manchester squad through British champions both in 1986 and 1985. He also guided Manchester through to the semifinals of the Korac Cup. He also served as head coach for the British men’s national team in the qualifying matches for at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul. The team finished sixth in the qualifying tournament. Brits did not succeed to qualify for the Olympic competition.

In the 2011-12 season, Whelton served as head men’s basketball coach at the State College of Florida and then took up an offer from China, signing with the Foshan Long Lions. In 2013, Whelton was back in Florida, serving as head boys basketball coach at the Sarasota Christian School until October 2014.
