Joseph Michael Prunty (born February 12th 1969) is an American professional basketball coach. He was the most recent head assistant coach of the Phoenix Suns of the National Basketball Association (NBA). Prior to that, he was Head Coach of the Milwaukee Bucks during the 2017-2018 season. In 37 games in the Prunty time in the era of Prunty, the Bucks were 21-16 (.568) which is the fourth highest winning percentage in the history of the franchise in the sixteen head coaches. At one time, Prunty owned the Milwaukee record for the most playoff wins by an head coach in the first year (3). Prunty was also the director of the Great Britain men’s national basketball team from June 2013 to September 2017. Prunty is a three-time NBA Champion as an assistant coach with the San Antonio Spurs (1999, 2003, and 2005) and was the 2005 Western Conference Champion with the Dallas Mavericks. Prunty has spent 23 years in the NBA with seven different teams. He was a part of an impressive 17 playoff appearances, and is widely regarded to be one of the top coaches within the American professional basketball. Then, in the year 2006, his quit San Antonio to become a Dallas Mavericks assistant coach, joining the team of the former Spurs head coach Avery Johnson. The team reached in the NBA Finals, losing to the Miami Heat in six games. The team finished the season with the most impressive performance in the league, with the MVP Dirk Nowitzki, but were disappointed in the first round of playoffs by the Don Nelson-led Golden State Warriors. Prunty quit the Mavericks to join to join the Portland Trail Blazers in 2008 after Avery Johnson was fired and was replaced by Rick Carlisle.
While Prunty was a member of the Trail Blazers’ coaching staff, the team had back-to-back 50 win seasons for the first time since the 1999-2000 and 2000-2001 NBA seasons. He also served as the Blazers’ head coach during the NBA Summer League in 2008 and 2009. He joined the Cleveland Cavaliers as an assistant coach in 2010, spending three seasons as a member of Byron Scott’s team. On August 20, 2013, he was hired as an assistant coach by the Brooklyn Nets. Nets’ head coach Jason Kidd was suspended for the first two games of the season after pleading guilty to a misdemeanor DWI charge stemming from an incident in July 2012. Kidd named Prunty to serve as acting head coach for the team’s season opener against Cleveland Cavaliers and their home opener against Miami Heat. The team went 1–1 in these games with a loss against Cleveland and a win against Miami and LeBron James. The Nets had previously lost 13 straight games against the Heat before Prunty ended the streak in his first game against them.
Despite the future of the British national team looking bleak due to the budget constraints, Prunty stayed on as coach as the team attempted to qualify for Eurobasket 2015. The cut in funding meant the team could not afford the insurance costs required to recruit top players, had to cancel training camp, and required players to sleep in dorm beds and live on £15 a day. After losses to Bosnia and Iceland, the team failed to qualify for the tournament.

Prunty was born in Sunnyvale, California and graduated from Fremont High School in 1987. He was a top high school athlete, before he went to play basketball in the NCAA tournament in De Anza College in Cupertino, California. He obtained a bachelor’s degree in Speech Communications from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo in 1991. He started with coaching at San Diego, California, as a coach at the University of San Diego High School. While he was an assistant coach at high school, Sacramento Kings head coach Luke Walton and former Chicago Cubs pitcher Mark Prior, were among his players. Walton as well as Prunty would get together sixteen years after, only this time, with his team, the Cleveland Cavaliers in the NBA. Prunty was the head of the freshman coach as well as a high school assistant in University High, helping the team to win three consecutive CIF San Diego Section titles.

Joe Prunty was named the head coach of the Great Britain men’s national basketball team in June 2013 after an extensive interview process following Chris Finch’s resignation. The choice was initially somewhat controversial as Prunty had little previous international coaching experience. Prunty’s first campaign as GB head coach was summer 2013. Despite being without top players Luol Deng, Ben Gordon, Joel Freeland, and Pops Mensah-Bonsu, Prunty began his tenure with a 61–55 win over Puerto Rico in an International Test Match at The Copper Box Arena, London. The team went on to upset Israel in their first game of Eurobasket 2013, earning a dramatic overtime victory. However, Great Britain ended the group phase with a 2–3 record, not good enough to advance. Because of this result, UK Sport cut its funding for the team.
