In 2007 Doerr started working in 2007 with Bill Anderson. Along along with Julien Peterson (drums), Adam Kahan (bass), and Billysteve Korpi (guitar), Anderson and Doerr created the poetry-driven alternative blues-rock group Churchwood which is a project to which Doerr contributes by writing lyrics and music and delivering vocal performances. Churchwood was signed to the San Antonio TX-based Saustex Media label in 2010 and has released four albums as well as an EP on Saustex. 2011 was the year that Churchwood released “Rimbaud Diddley” (lyrics in French by Doerr) on Season 4 episode 4 (“Una Venta”) of AMC’s “Sons of Anarchy.”

in 1986 Doerr was the founder of the alt-rock group Ballad Shambles with long- time collaborator and guitarist Bill Anderson (formerly of The Meat Purveyors) as well as Bassist Michael Maye (with whom Doerr is featured on Grammy award- winning “Big Guitars from Texas”) as well as drummer Stan Moore (formerly of Zakary Thaks). The group released one studio album with Skyclad Records. After Ballad Shambles disbanded in 1988, Doerr and Anderson formed Hand of Glory with bassist Tim Swingle and drummer Mike Navarro. Hand of Glory released two studio albums and an album, “Like a Nightmare,” recorded live in Berlin on the Skyclad label, before breaking up in 1992.

In the midst of a constant tour, Doerr became temporarily disillusioned with the scene of music; He returned to academia and dropped from St. Louis University in 1982. Doerr was a graduate of The University of Texas at Austin in 1995 with a bachelor’s degree in English and then enrolled in graduate studies in The University of Notre Dame in 1996. Doerr was awarded three degrees over the span of seven years studying during his time at Notre Dame: an MFA (Creative Poetry, Writing) as well as the degree of an MA (English) and an Ph.D. (English). After 2003, Doerr moved back in Austin where he currently lives with his wife Mary.

The native to St. Louis, Missouri, Doerr moved to Austin, Texas in 1983 to join The LeRoi Brothers, a rock group that was comprised of Mike Buck, Don Leady, Alex Napier, and Doerr’s brother Steve. Doerr who’s energetic performing style caught the eye to “The Dean of American Rock Critics” Robert Christgau, recorded on numerous albums together with the LeRoi Brothers including the Columbia Records EP “Forget About the Danger, Think of the Fun.” Doerr has also performed extensively with the group across Europe in addition to the US and performed an unforgettable show during Austin City Limits before leaving the band after 1986 in pursuit of different pursuits. The year 2005 saw Doerr returned to The LeRoi Brothers and continues to perform in the band until the present. The band was inducted into the Austin Music Hall of Fame on March 14, 2014. Doerr along with the remaining LeRoi Brothers band members were admitted into the Austin Music Hall of Fame.

Doerr is the author of 2016’s praiseworthy collection of poetry and lyrics Tocayo: New & Selected Poems & Songs, Order of the Ordinary(a well-received collection of poems published by Salt Publishing), and the editor of the Salt Companion to John Matthias, a favorably reviewed collection of essays on Matthias’s later work. Doerr’s literary criticism, reviews, and articles have appeared in a number of publications, including The Encyclopedia of American Poetry: The Twentieth Century, in which Doerr writes extensively on John Ashberry, Robert Creeley, and the New Formalism movement in American poetry. In addition to his reputation as a scholar of American poetry, Doerr has achieved international (primarily British) literary renown (see, for example, his work in Poetry Nation Review and Stand). In recent years, various anthologists have chosen to include Doerr’s work in memorable collections such as The Open Light: Poets from Notre Dame, 1991–2008, and The Possibility of Language: Seven New Poets. Since 2006, Doerr has taught writing at St. Edward’s University in Austin.
