Couture-Nowak (February 17th 1958 – April 16 17th, 2007) was an instructor of French in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literature at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia and was the sole Canadian person killed in the Virginia Tech shooting. Her birthplace was in Canada and was a resident within Truro, Nova Scotia, she founded the first Francophone school in the region.
In 2001, Couture-Nowak along with her husband relocated with their families into Blacksburg, Virginia, where her husband was accepted for the position of Professor and Director of the Department of Horticulture at Virginia Tech. Couture-Nowak was offered a job as an instructor of French within the Department of Foreign Languages and Literature. In her lifetime, she said she was proud to be a Canadian-born Frenchman.
In May 2008, Virginia Tech named Couture-Nowak’s widower, Jerzy Nowak, as the founding director of its newly created Center for Peace Studies and Violence Prevention. He served as its director for three years, until his retirement from the university.
Along with the help of two local Francophone parents, Couture-Nowak founded an Ecole acadienne de Truro, the first French public school in the language of the central region of Nova Scotia in September, 1997. The school is operated by the provincial council of education, Conseil scolaire acadien the Ecole Acadienne de Truro is now a growing school, from just 36 pupils in the year 1997, to now 118 from grades 1 through 10. The school’s initial senior class was graduated in the year the year 2006.

Born in Montreal She had a childhood at Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, the oldest child of five. Her graduation from Yarmouth Consolidated Memorial High School in the year 1981.
Couture first worked in the newly opened daycare run by Yarmouth Boys and Girls Club. She decided to pursue a education at Nova Scotia Teachers College in Truro. Her graduation was in 1989. and received a degree from St. Mary’s University in Halifax in the beginning of 1990. While within Truro, Couture worked as an French teacher within the Humanities Department at Nova Scotia Agricultural College (NSAC). She was married to Jerzy Nowak, a professor within the Horticulture Department at NSAC. Couture-Nowak was the mother of two daughters: Sylvie as well as Francine.
Couture-Nowak was teaching an Intermediate French class in Room 211 at Norris Hall on the morning of April 16, 2007 when she was killed by Seung-Hui Cho as one of the 32 victims in the Virginia Tech shooting. Couture-Nowak, one of the first to be shot in Norris 211, was 49 years old when she died.
