After the discovery of Yeates’s body, police of the Avon and Somerset Constabulary issued an appeal to anyone with information regarding Yeates’s death to share it and were able to identify similarities with cases that were not solved. The cases that they were particularly interested in were the cases of 20-year-old Glenis Carruthers, who was strangled during 1974. Melanie Hall, aged 25 who disappeared in 1996, and the body was found 13 years later, and the 35-year-old Claudia Lawrence who went missing in 2009. Investigators discovered “striking similarities” between the Yeates and Hall cases, particularly their appearance and age, and concluded that they disappeared upon returning home from having a meeting with acquaintances, however the possibility of a connection was later brushed aside by authorities. The police collected surveillance footage from the Clifton Suspension Bridge, which is the fastest route from the scene of crime towards the Clifton suburb, where Yeates had last been seen. The footage was not of high quality, which made it difficult to distinguish people or vehicle registration numbers. The police were aware that the suspect could have taken advantage of an alternative bridge crossing the River Avon less than a mile to the south in order to stay out of CCTV coverage.
