Cherry was born the 18th of March, 1996 and was the daughter of Mary Margaret (nee Haslette) and Thomas Alastair Cherry. Cherry attended Holy Cross primary school, and later in St Margaret’s Convent School in Edinburgh as well as the University of Edinburgh, where she graduated with an upper-class Bachelor of Laws honours degree in 1988. She then earned and a Master of Laws degree in 1989, and a diploma for Legal Practice the year 1990.

She was a standing Junior Counsel for the Scottish Government from 2003 to 2008, as well as as an Advocate and Senior Advocate until 2011. She was appointed Queen’s Counsel in the year 2009 and was an advocate for Arnot Manderson, the Arnot Manderson stable of the Faculty of Advocates until her election to parliament.

Joanna Catherine Cherry QC (born 18 March 1966) is a Scottish National Party (SNP) politician. She is an MP (MP) of Edinburgh South West since May 2015 and is currently the SNP Legal and Home Affairs spokesperson in the House of Commons.

After graduate studies, Cherry worked as a research assistant at the Scottish Law Commission (1990) before becoming an attorney with Brodies WS. Edinburgh law company Brodies WS until 1995. She also served as part-time instructor on constitutional law and family law, and Civil court law in the University of Edinburgh from 1990-1996.

Cherry set up the “Lawyers for Yes” group, which campaigned for a “Yes” (pro- independence) vote in the 2014 Scottish independence referendum. In February 2015, she was adopted as the Scottish National Party (SNP) candidate for Edinburgh South West in the May 2015 United Kingdom general election. She won the seat, which she then held in the subsequent June 2017 general election although with a reduced majority of just over 1,000 votes, making her seat the most marginal in Edinburgh at the time. Following her election in 2015, Cherry was appointed as the SNP spokesperson for Justice and Home Affairs at Westminster.
