Joachim Levy is one of the most popular and richest Brazilian economist who was born on February 17, 1961 in Geneva, Canton of Geneva, Switzerland. Joaquim Vieira Ferreira Levy (born 17 February 1961) is a Brazilian economist, and Brazil’s former Finance Minister. Levy was appointed on January 1st in 2015, at the inauguration ceremony of President Dilma Rousseff’s second term. Levy was also President of the Brazilian Development Bank (BNDES).
In the month of January 2003, he was named Treasury Secretary (an official who in Brazil works under the Minister of Finance) by President Luis Inacio Lula da Silva and Levy held the position until the year 2006. The economist who was trained in Chicago and the Former Brazil Treasury chief is known as an experienced , orthodox professional and an experienced fiscal hawk who helped Brazil achieve its investment grade credit rating through a review of the expenditure and restructuring the structure of its debt.
On November 27, 2014, president Dilma Rousseff named Levy as the country’s Finance Minister for her second term, replacing Guido Mantega. Levy took office as Finance Minister on January 1, 2015.
On January 11, 2016, World Bank Group president Jim Yong Kim named Levy as the bank’s Chief Financial Officer, replacing Bertrand Badre. Levy’s appointment at the World Bank Group was effective February 1, 2016. As Former Managing Director and World Bank Group Chief Financial Officer [1], Joaquim Levy was responsible for the financial and risk management strategies of the World Bank Group and for the institutions that make up the Group. This includes development of new, innovative financial products and services, oversight of the financial reporting, risk management, and mobilization of financial resources in alignment with the Group’s strategy.
Between 1999 to 2000, he was an economist on the move in the European Central Bank, having been in the division that dealt with Capital Markets and Monetary Strategy. In 2000, he was appointed as Deputy Secretary for Economic Policy in Brazil’s Ministry of Finance, and in 2001 he was appointed Chief Economist of Brazil’s Ministry of Planning, Budget, and Management.

He was an Economics Professor at FGV during the 1990s prior to becoming a member of the IMF in 1992, where he was employed from 1992 until 1999. In the IMF Mr. Levy was in various positions within departments such as the Western Hemisphere Department (1992), Europe I Department (1993-1997), Capital Markets, and Research (1997-1998). Mr. Levy was Vice-President of the Inter- American Development Bank and Finance Secretary for Rio de Janeiro, the state of Rio de Janeiro, during the first term under governor Sergio Cabral Filho.

From 2007 to 2010 Levy served as Finance Secretary of the State of Rio de Janeiro, under Governor Sérgio Cabral. From 2010 to November 2014, Mr Levy was the President of Bradesco Asset Management, an asset arm of the Brazilian giant financial conglomerate Bradesco, with more than US$130 billion under management. Mr Levy left Bradesco at the invitation from Dilma Rousseff to assume the Ministry of Finance.
