James Thomson (born 15 May 1971) is a Scottish footballer. He was nicknamed JT. Thomson played as a central defensive player. Thomson’s greatest accomplishments were his 358 appearances with Queen of the South, in which he was captain of the team. Thomson also had some success during shorter time frames with Clyde and Arbroath as well as for Stenhousemuir. Thomson played a brief stint as the caretaker manager for Queen of the South during the months of November and December 2016. He is currently the manager for Kilsyth Rangers in the SJFA West Region Championship.

Thomson was named ‘player of the year’ 3 times during a 10-year span at his Dumfries club. In late August and in early September of 2006, Thomson was treated for a “clean up procedure’ on his knee but was able to return with a bang and even scored an overhead strike.

Thomson made his 300th Queens appearance on 20 October 2007 in a First Division match against St Johnstone and is one of the select players to have made more than 300 appearances for Queen of the South.

Thomson was given a testimonial by Queens on 18 July 2010. The result was a 1–0 win for Rangers. Thomson was retained as a player for the 2009–10 season after making 358 first team appearances and scoring a dozen goals. Thomson is 11th in the club’s all time appearances list and also coached the under-19s team for the 2010–11 season. In his second spell at Queens, Thomson made 242 league appearances and scored 7 goals.

Thomson was the first to join Dumfries team Queen of the South as the club was being rebuilt in 1997, in the post Harkness time. The new director Norman Blount was getting the wheels rolling on the revival of the club. In 1997, the club made it to the Scottish Challenge Cup Final for the first time. Second Division Queens lost 1-0 to First Division Falkirk, in spite of a lively Queens performance on Motherwell’s Fir Park, a performance which included the”Man of the Match” award being awarded to Queens experienced central midfielder Tommy Bryce and an early debut of Jamie McAllister. The final shot of Derek Townsley denied Queens an equaliser when his sharp-edged chance was blocked by the bar.
