Jim Suhler is one of the most popular and richest Singer who was born on December 30, 1960 in Dallas, Texas, United States. Jim Suhler was born in Dallas, Texas on December 30 1960. He was raised in the Lakewood neighborhood in Dallas, Texas and attended Hillcrest High School. The first time he heard music was through The Beatles, The Rolling Stones as well as others British Invasion bands on Dallas AM’s top 40 radio station KLIF in the 1960s. The main influences at this moment included Lynyrd Skynyrd and the Allman Brothers Band, ZZ Top, Johnny Winter, Led Zeppelin and Rory Gallagher among other artists. Through these early years, Suhler was exposed to Texas guitarists performing locally in North Texas nightclubs like Bugs Henderson, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Anson Funderburgh, Jimmie Vaughan and Rocky Hill. Suhler performed in a variety of obscure cover bands and original ones throughout his time, initially as a backup singer or guitarist. He was aware at an early age that he was destined to become a musician (he began playing guitar when he was 14) however it was only after a visit to Mississippi where he got to meet the famous artist, Son Thomas, that Suhler knew with certainty that was destined to be a blues musician. Suhler stated of the trip, “He was really gracious – he let me come in and we played together. It was really special.”

When he was playing the Homewreckers performance at an Memphis, Tennessee club called Huey’s and was discovered to George Thorogood, eventually joining the Destroyers in 1999. Thorogood was impressed by Suhler’s arranging, playing as well as songwriting talents and they formed friendship. When the Homewreckers disintegrated in the middle of 1991, Suhler formed power trio Monkey Beat, with drummer Paul Hollis and bassist/vocalist Carlton Powell. At the period, Suhler sent a four song demo to Thorogood’s engineer/producer Terry Manning, after Thorogood informed Suhler, “Terry Would Love You Guys”. Manning was impressed by Monkey Beat and agreed to produce and release an album through Manning’s new label Lucky Seven records. “Radio Mojo” (1992) and “Shake,” 1995 “Radio Mojo” (1992) and “Shake” (1995) were the result of this first collaboration. Numerous tours that opened to Thorogood & the Destroyers across North America in 1993-95 followed. Thorogood also allowed Suhler perform with his on numerous radio shows as well as appear in stores with him to give Monkey Beat greater exposure. Suhler was a full-time part of George Thorogood & The Destroyer’s in the year 1999. He has appeared on every single release by the group since then playing lead guitar and rhythm and co-writing songs for the group.

The current Monkey Beat lineup includes: Shawn Phares on keyboards/accordion (joined in 2000); Patrick Smith on bass (joined in 2019); and Beau Chadwell on drums/percussion (joined in 2011). Former members include Jimmy Morgan & Paul Hollis (both on drums) and also Carlton Powell on bass guitar/vocals (co- founding member), as well as Christopher Alexander on bass guitar.

“Bad JuJu”, which was produced by noted producer Jim Gaines (Stevie Ray Vaughan, Carlos Santana) was easily the most fully realized Monkey Beat album to date, & released by Lucky Seven records in 2001. Texas rock ‘n roll, Zydeco, Tex-Mex music, Hip Hop & Blues influences were all evident on the songs on this album.

Suhler did not have the honor of performing on concert stage alongside Stevie Ray Vaughan, but Suhler did get to meet the legend of blues in a few occasions firstly in 1989 at his father’s jewelry shop located in Dallas when Vaughan came in to get the repair of his watch. His father, who was Suhler’s dad, asked Stevie to provide any tips for his son who was a musician and his response to him was “Yeah, keep it clean” which means avoid using drugs. This advice Suhler was able to take to heart. When Vaughan was not able to collect his watch Suhler determined to give it back to him and he did “Vaughan was playing in Dallas at Fair Park, I take his watch to him, get backstage and he’s very amused that I’m even there bringing him his watch–he was very polite, a very sweet, soft-spoken man. And I’m not big on vibes and auras and stuff like that but I swear on everything that’s holy to me that when Stevie walked up to me he radiated a light, he had an aura about him. And I don’t even like to say things like that because people say ‘Yeah, sure’ – but he was a big inspiration to me”.
