After graduating, Simon began working as an animator background artist at Paramount Pictures’ animation studio. Simon was a student at the New York City’s High School of Art and Design and graduated in 1963. In that school, he won an award for outstanding performance in animation. He also earned two awards by the Junior Epstein Memorial Foundation as and a scholarship to SVA, the School of Visual Arts. At SVA He initially pursued an occupation in live action television, but moved to animation.

In the year 1972, he founded Wantu Animation Inc., initially situated at New York City and then Los Angeles. Simon’s clients included PBS children’s program The Electric Company, for which his debut short film, “Hey Diddle Diddle” was awarded in the International Animation Film Association’s Animation Awards Festival; WNET’s children’s educational program Vegetable Soup; Sesame Street and Sesame Street; the Black Psychiatrists of America; and the New York Public Library.

In 2009, he said that some career setbacks “led me to a little depression, a little alcoholism and homelessness with me and my dog sleeping in the car.” After not drawing for 10 years, he took up oil painting and had a show at the St. Clair gallery in El Cajon, California, near San Diego, where he was then living.
