On the 11th of February, 2010, Rodwell was appointed the chief executive officer of Notts County after a buy out of the County through Ray Trew. Rodwell was forced to leave Notts County in March 2015 to accept the post Chief Executive Officer of Scunthorpe United Football Club, and on the 22nd of April 2020, he was appointed the chief executive position of Sunderland.

Rodwell began his football career by playing junior football with Lincoln City and was offered apprentice forms prior Lincoln being the first team to be to be relegated out of the league and into Conference in the year 1987. There was uncertainty over the status of Lincoln’s players Rodwell decided to pursue his training with Darlington. After leaving Darlington, Rodwell went to play football in Malaysia with Sabah State. Rodwell was transferred from Boston United to Boston United in February 2002 to help the Pilgrims to make it into the league. After leaving Boston, Jim played for Farnborough Town then Aldershot Town and eventually Tamworth. Then, in January of 2004, Jim was back in Boston United, initially as Manager in caretaker capacity, but later being appointed Director of football , eventually taking over as Chairman at the end of June of 2006. On July 7, 2007, following turbulent times Rodwell was forced to resign as Chairman following the news of the club’s sale in 2007 to Chestnut Homes.
