In 2009, Joyce was inducted into the Irish American Baseball Hall of Fame.
Joyce had been the second base umpire for Dallas Braden’s perfect game on May 9, 2010, less than a month before the Galarraga game. He was also the first base umpire for the no-hitter pitched by Carlos Zambrano on September 14, 2008.

James Alfred Joyce III (born on October 3, 1955) is an ex- American professional professional baseball umpire, best known for his erroneous safe decision in Armando Galarraga’s close-to-perfect game in June of 2010. He was a member of the American League (AL) from 1987 to 1999 and then throughout Major League Baseball (MLB) from 2000 until the year 2016. He wore the uniform number 6 for MLB and also number 6 working in the AL. His strike calls were extremely intense and loud like the ex-umpire Bruce Froemming.
After finishing his studies at Bowling Green State University in 1977, he was an umpire for the Midwest League (1978-1979), the Florida Instructional League (1978) as well as the Texas League (1980), the Pacific Coast League (1981-1986, 1988) and the International League (1987), and the Dominican League (1983). As of 1989 Joyce received a promotion from into the Pacific Coast League to the American League upon the death of MLB umpire Nick Bremigan.
