On September 16, 1996 Joyce stopped his fellow umpire John Hirschbeck when Hirschbeck angrily entered the Baltimore Orioles clubhouse to confront Roberto Alomar. Prior to the incident, Alomar had made comments about how Hirschbeck’s behavior changed following the death his son.

In 2009, Joyce was inducted into the Irish American Baseball Hall of Fame.

Joyce had been the second base umpire for Dallas Braden’s perfect game on May 9, 2010, less than a month before the Galarraga game. He was also the first base umpire for the no-hitter pitched by Carlos Zambrano on September 14, 2008.

James Alfred Joyce III (born on October 3, 1955) is an ex- American professional professional baseball umpire, best known for his erroneous safe decision in Armando Galarraga’s close-to-perfect game in June of 2010. He was a member of the American League (AL) from 1987 to 1999 and then throughout Major League Baseball (MLB) from 2000 until the year 2016. He wore the uniform number 6 for MLB and also number 6 working in the AL. His strike calls were extremely intense and loud like the ex-umpire Bruce Froemming.
