At the USAG National Championships Hartung took home the gold medal for all around medal in the year 1981. Over the course of several years, Hartung has won 13 gold medals for apparatuses.. He is also regarded as one of the greatest NCAA men’s gymnasts ever as the head of the five-time in a row winner Nebraska team, and due to his record of 22 All-Americans. He also was the 1981 and 1980 NCAA overall champion.
After gymnastics, Hartung became a high level gymnastics judge. Since 2006, he has been an assistant coach of the men’s gymnastics team at the University of Nebraska.
Hartung was part in the team for 1980’s Olympic team, but was unable to take part because of his participation in the U.S. boycott of the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow, Russia. In consolation, he became one of 461 athletes who would be awarded the Congressional Gold Medal many years afterward. In 1984 He was part of the gold medal award-winning Olympic Team.

Hartung played with his school, the University of Nebraska and was an integral part of four consecutive national championship teams from 1979 to 1982. Hartung was the overall NCAA champion in 1981 and 1980. In his professional career Hartung also took home five gold medals for apparatus during the NCAA championships. In 1982, Hartung won the Nissen Award (gymnastics’s “Heisman”).
The year 1979 was the one when Hartung became a participant of the 1979 U.S. bronze-medal winning World Championships team. Hartung also played in the 1978 Worlds, 1981 and 1983 Worlds teams.
Hartung entered the U.S. Gymnastics Hall of Fame as a member of the gold medal Olympic team in 1984 and then in 1997 as an individual. In 2006, he and his 1984 teammates were inducted into the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame. Hartung is also a member of the Nebraska High School Hall of Fame and the Omaha Sports Hall of Fame.
