Gantner is not a regular home run hitter. The 3rd of September, 1991 Gantner struck his first home hit since 1987, bringing to an end an entire streak of 1,762 games without a single. Gantner’s final home run of his career was in August 14th, 1992 in the 13th innings, facing Boston Red Sox reliever Jeff Reardon. Gantner hit the pitch he was throwing into the bleachers of the right field at Milwaukee County Stadium, giving the Brewers the victory of 8-7. Brewers announcer Bob Uecker had the call withthe following words “Here’s the pitch to Gantner. He hits one to right and deep. Get up. Get up. Get outta here – gone! A dinger for Klinger! And this game is over. Woah, Jimmy Gantner!”
Gantner entered his first season as field manager of the Wisconsin Woodchucks in the Northwoods League in 2007.
Gantner grew up in Eden, Wisconsin, and attended Campbellsport High School in nearby Campbellsport, Wisconsin. He played his college baseball at the University of Wisconsin–Oshkosh, where he was enshrined into the Titans’ Hall of Fame in 1984.
Gantner pitched an innings of relief against Kansas City Royals on August 29th, 1979. He allowed two hits. Although the game was one of the most lopsided Gantner was nearly ejected because of a dispute over strikes and balls in front of the umpire.

Gantner was a 12th round draft pick in 1974’s amateur draft. Gantner was a two-year player with the minors prior to becoming a majors call-up. He is most well-known for his steady play that resulted in an impressive .274 lifetime batting average over 17 seasons. Gantner or “Gumby” as he was popularly referred to due to his ability to turn double plays and is the 2nd baseman of the Brewers who took home the American League pennant in 1982 but lost seven out of the St. Louis Cardinals in the World Series. Gantner was the one to score the final winning run in the seventh 5th inning in the crucial match of the ALCS and scored after Charlie Moore on Cecil Cooper’s RBI single. Gantner was a star in the infield throughout the 1980s alongside Hall of Famer Robin Yount (SS/OF), Paul Molitor (3B) as well as the former Brewer legendary Cecil Cooper (1B).
In his first campaign, Gantner pinch-ran for Hank Aaron in Aaron’s last Major League game on October 3, 1976.
