James Paul “Jimbo” Covert (born on March 22nd in 1960) is an ex- American professional and college footballer who played as an offensive player within the National Football League (NFL) for eight seasons in the 1980s and the early 1990s. Covert played in the NCAA football tournament for at the University of Pittsburgh, and was named an All-American. He was chosen during the initial round in 1983’s NFL Draft, and played professionally for the NFL’s Chicago Bears.
While the Bears had a 22nd place overall defense in 1982 but the Bears gradually increased its efficiency thanks to Covert as a regular starter during the following few seasons reaching second place in the league by the year 1985. Additionally, the team was able to move from 18th in the rushing rankings in 1982 to the top of in the conference for four seasons, from 1983 to 1986. The Bears also placed second in the rushing department twice in 1989 and 1990 and third, in 1988 in the course of Covert’s playing career.
During Covert’s career, he was named to an All-Pro team four straight years (1984–1987), a first- or second-team All-NFC selection four times (1985–1987, 1990), and a first- or second-team All-NFL selection three times. Covert was a consensus All-NFL and All-Pro pick in 1985 and 1986. He was selected to two Pro Bowls, in 1985 and 1986. In 1985 he was selected as the NFC’s offensive lineman of the year and in 1986 he was selected as the Miller Lite NFL Offensive Lineman of the Year.
In 1986, Covert appeared in a 20-man battle royal at WrestleMania 2 along with other NFL stars.

Covert is a native of Conway, Pennsylvania. He was a star in wrestling and football in the wrestling and football arenas at Freedom Area High School located in Beaver County, west of Pittsburgh. For football, Covert led the 1977 Freedom Bulldogs, with an undefeated record of 11-0 to win the Midwestern Athletic Conference (MAC) Championship as an senior. While the Bulldogs ultimately lost to Laurel High School in the second round of the Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League (WPIAL) playoffs, Covert earned UPI First-Team All-State recognition and was a sought-after player.
Covert began his freshman year at Pitt in the year 1978. He began his collegiate journey as a defensive player and was a part of every game in his freshman season and was particularly active in goals-line or short-yardage scenarios. An injury to his shoulder kept him out during the 1979 season, and he was forced to redshirt. In response to the suggestion from defensive coordinator of the line Joe Moore, he switched to offensive tackle in the spring of 1980. This was a move which would eventually lead Covert towards his place in the College Football Hall of Fame.
Covert was chosen in the first round of the 1983 NFL Draft (sixth overall) by the Chicago Bears and head coach Mike Ditka, himself a former Pitt All- American from Western Pennsylvania. “Jimbo’s the guy we wanted. From Day 1, we put him at left tackle and moved on,” Ditka said. “You don’t get too many people who come along who can make that impact. He had the respect of all his teammates and all his coaches.” He became the starter at the left tackle position and was named to the UPI’s 1983 NFL All-Rookie team.
