She was named to be a Fellow in the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2001.
In May 2007, Abramson was seriously injured in a truck-pedestrian crash near the New York Times’s headquarters in Times Square. She subsequently filed a lawsuit against the truck’s driver, owner, and operator, who was involved in the crash, as well two companies involved in the crash.
In February 2007, Abramson testified in the perjury trial of Scooter Libby, United States v. Libby. She was called as a defense witness to undercut the credibility of Judith Miller.

When she was being a Harvard undergraduate, she served as the editor of the arts for The Harvard Independent, and worked for Time magazine from 1973 to 1976. In the following years, she spent more than 10 years as a senior staff reporter at The American Lawyer. The year 1986 saw her named as editor-in- chief for Legal Times in Washington, D.C. The position lasted over two terms. From 1988 until 1997, she worked as a senior reporter within The Washington department for The Wall Street Journal, then rising to become the deputy chief of the bureau. She was hired by The New York Times in 1997, and became the Washington bureau chief in December of 2000.

In a February 2013 interview, Abramson spoke of the conflict she had with Raines as D.C. bureau chief, saying, “Howell from the get-go just had no use for me. … I did think about quitting.” Abramson was named to the news managing editor position (with co-Managing Editor John M. Geddes) by Raines’ successor Bill Keller.
