Following Stanford, Watkins earned a Doctorate in Geology from the University of California, Los Angeles. Her graduate work, under the direction from Prof. An Yin, focused on the mechanisms that encase the landslides that occur in Mars and Earth as well as the effects on water activity. Prior to being selected for the astronaut program, Watkins worked as a postdoctoral researcher in California Institute of Technology. California Institute of Technology, which was also where she served as an assistant coach for the basketball team for women.
Watkins was part of NEEMO Mission 23 between June 10, 2019, 2019 to June 22, 2019. The mission evaluated the capabilities and objectives of a deep space missions and lunar explorations of the seafloor.
Watkins started playing rugby during her first semester at Stanford and was with the club for the next four years. In her sophomore year she was a part of the Division I national champion team. She is an American woman’s team’s rugby star in the sevens. She was a member of the USA Eagles in its 3rd-place place finish in the 2010 Rugby World Cup Sevens. In the World Cup she was the most prolific scorer in this US team.

Jessica Andrea Watkins (born May 5 1988) is an American geologist and former international athlete in rugby, an aquanaut, and NASA astronaut.
In her academic professional career, Watkins received numerous awards which included one of them being a Caltech Division of Geological and Planetary Sciences Chair’s Postdoctoral Fellowship and an award from the California Alliance for Graduate Education and the Professoriate Postdoctoral Fellowship, the UCLA Department of Earth and Space Sciences Harold and Mayla Sullwold Memorial Scholarship in Academic Excellence as well as Outstanding Original Research, a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship in Geosciences and The Geological Society of America Diversity Award of the Geosciences Minority Research Grant Award and the UCLA Chancellor’s Prize, and the California Space Grant Consortium Fellowship. While at NASA She was a member of the Mars Science Laboratory Prime Mission Science and Operations Team which was awarded the NASA Group Achievement Award as well. Additionally, was also offered an NASA Earth and Space Science Fellowship in Planetary Science. Her All-American record was as a Rugby player from 2008 to 2010.
As an undergraduate, Watkins worked at the Ames Research Center to support the Mars Phoenix lander and prototype Mars drill testing. She was also a chief geologist for the NASA Spaceward Bound Crew 86 at the Mars Desert Research Station. As a graduate student, she worked at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory on the NEOWISE project to survey near-Earth asteroids, and she is a collaborator on the Mars rover Curiosity. She has served as a planner for the Mars 2020 rover and a Mars sample-return mission, and was a science team member for a Desert Research and Technology Studies analog mission. As a postdoctoral fellow at Caltech, and as a collaborator on the Mars Science Laboratory Science Team, she participated in daily planning of the Mars rover activities and uses its image data combined with orbital data to investigate the stratigraphy, geology, and geomorphology of Mars. In June 2017, she was selected as a member of NASA Astronaut Group 22, and began her two-year training in August.
