He is most well-known for his work as the storyboard writer and storyboard artist for the animated TV series Adventure Time and as the creator of the graphic novel Forming. He also created the cartoon short Manly exclusively on Cartoon Hangover and was created by Justin, his younger brother. As of 2005 Jesse, Justin, and the drummer John Heron moved into a warehouse in West Philadelphia which they coined The Avant Gentlemen’s Lodge. The warehouse was transformed into a venue for DIY which was home to “The Astral Projection Club” and plays written by local playwrights, seasonal solstice and equinox celebrations as well as musical performances by prominent acts like Dan Deacon, Kayo Dot as well as The Flying Luttenbachers.

His work on Adventure Time gained him an Emmy Award nomination in 2012 for the third season episode “Too Young”.

Jesse has published three graphic novel series: The Backwards Folding Mirror, Follow Me, and Forming. As of February 2018, the story of Forming continues to be updated on his website and is collected in volumes through Nobrow Press. Forming has received a fair share of critical attention; Rob Clough of The Comics Journal described it as “a success on so many different levels” and praised the series’ storyline and “brightly colored and bizarre images”.

At the age of 16, Jesse formed the punk group, Anal Sausage with his brother and his friend Dave “Sausage” Walling. The band was active from 1993 until 1999 and became a cult phenomenon within the punk underground scene in Philadelphia and played at venues such as the famous Stalag 13. When Anal Sausage disbanded, Jesse and Justin moved into a home located in South Philadelphia with their high school pal, Brandon Beaver, who later joined in the group mewithoutYou. They created a recording studio inside their basement where they could practice and record with their group Hiroshima Nagasaki.
