McFarlane started his journey to become a senior-level athlete during his 2013 campaign. In the 2013 South American Championships in Athletics McFarlane set a personal record time of 13.85 seconds to secure fourth place in the hurdles and his brother took the top spot in the same event in a Peruvian record time of 13.85 seconds. Both were competing in the long leap, with Javier placing eighth. Two senior medals were awarded during the Bolivarian Games, which took place on the turf at home in Trujillo in which he placed second in the high jump and was second for the long leap (Jorge was the winner of both). This year’s South American Games marked a turning point for the 22-year-old when he won the first gold senior medal in the 110-meter hurdles with a personal best speed that was 13.77 seconds. He also placed the fifth long jumper and beat his brother in both events. The final for the hurdles during the 2014 Ibero- American Championships in Athletics proved to be a family affair , as Jorge defeated Javier to win the title by five hundredths of one second. His winning run was 13.53 was a record for the nation in addition to Javier McFarlane’s 13.57 seconds was a personal record – the very slow reaction speed from Javier was the main different between both. The final event of his season was the Pan American Sports Festival, placing 4th overall in his hurdles. In Lima, McFarlane followed his older brother, Jorge, into the sports of athletics. While Jorge’s brother was more adept at long jump and hurdling Javier McFarlane began with combined track and field competitions and won the octathlon in the 2009 South American Youth Championships in Athletics that was held in his hometown of Lima. He also won winning a bronze medal at the 110-meter hurdles. The 16-year-old Peruvian also participated in the 2008 higher age group South American Championships for Under-23 level in Athletics that was as well as in Lima the year before. McFarlane repeated continental level success at the 2015 South American Championships in Athletics, building on his South American Games title with a 110 m hurdles bronze medal in front of a home crowd in Lima, and finishing just one hundredth of a second behind his brother.
