Javier Maroto is one of the most popular and richest Politician who was born on January 6, 1972 in Vitoria-Gasteiz, Basque Country, Spain. Maroto was born in Vitoria, Basque Country, on 6 January 1972.

He was Vitoria-Gasteiz’s Mayor from 2011 until 2015, which is the capital city in the Basque Country and of the province of Alava. In addition was a an elected member of the Basque Parliament, and in the year 2016, he was elected as a to the Congress of Deputies until 2019.

In June 2015, Maroto announced his engagement to longtime partner José Manuel “Josema” Rodríguez. The wedding was held on 18 September 2015 at Vitoria’s city hall. The wedding gained political significance when it was announced that Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, who had challenged the law approving same sex marriage when he was Opposition leader, would be attending the wedding as a guest.

On June 18, 2015, he was appointed Sectorial Under-secretary of the People’s Party by Mariano Rajoy, becoming a member of the People’s Party’s national board.

In 2008, Maroto was elected the spokesperson of the People’s Party in Vitoria, and was a member of the executive board for the city’s municipal corporation Widening 21, which was responsible for urban development in Vitoria’s newly developed Salburua and Zabalgana zones. He also served as Secretary for the People’s Party in Alava, and one of only a only members of the party who have publicly criticised its policy on gay weddings. On the 5th of November of 2010, in an interview on Radio Vitoria, he stated that “it would be a mistake to eliminate the gay marriage bill”.

He was elected in 1999 and was a part in the race for the position of Mayor in Vitoria. Following his membership of the New Generations of Alava and following the triumph from the People’s Party (PP) in Vitoria in 1999, he was appointed to the post of the Deputy Mayor and Councillor for Finance in the PP from 1999 to 2007. In his two years as the Mayor Alfonso Alonso, he also was the Government Spokesman as well as the director of the municipal corporation Gilsa and was in charge of the administration of industrial property in Vitoria and as a Councillor in charge for New Technologies.

On June 23rd of 2010, Maroto declared his candidacy to be the office of mayor in Vitoria for the year 2011. The election was won in the May 22nd, 2011, election with a total of 9 seats. He was appointed the mayor on June 11, 2011.

During the ceremony for the European Green Capital Award, passed from one Covenant signatory city to another, on November 29, 2012, Maroto gave the floor to Patrick Rimbert, Mayor of Nantes. Vitoria-Gasteiz was the Green Capital of Europe in 2012, and Nantes was the Green Capital in 2013.
