Jason Trey Hooten (born April 20th in 1969) has been named head coach for the Sam Houston State University Men’s Basketball team. Jason Hooten had previously served as an assistant coach during the previous six seasons however, he was appointed the Bearkats the new coaches for men’s basketball on April 2nd in 2010. After six seasons as a Bearkat, Hooten has helped direct the team to a 127-59 mark and four 20+ win seasons. Hooten’s first game as the head coach for his team, the SHSU Bearkats came in 72-47 victory over the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor at Johnson Coliseum. After the first victory, Hooten went on to finish 3-1 in his debut month as a coach. In the 2010-2011 season, Hooten led the Bearkats to an 18-13 record. They were 10-6-2 during the Southland Conference, while earning the Bearkats the #3 seed in the Southland Conference Tournament. Hooten was victorious in his first postseason game as head coach by knocking out his teammate number 6 Stephen F. Austin in the first round, with a score of 61-45. The second round match resulted in a loss against the eventual champions of the conference tournament: the UT-San Antonio team 79-70.
Hooten was added to the SHSU staff on July 1 2004 and was instrumental in running practices as well as recruiting, scouting, academics and scheduling. Hooten is a 1987 graduate from Killeen Ellison High School and was a baseball and basketball player who played for the school. Hooten was named All- District, All CenTex and all-super CenTex while helping his team win the bi- district championship in his senior. He holds school record records for assists and scoring. In the field, he twice was awarded All-District honorable mention. He also scrimmaged for three times. Hooten has two bachelor’s degrees at Tarleton State, earning a bachelor’s degree in exercise and sports studies in 1993, and the master’s degree in 1995. Hooten was a two-year player playing at McLennan Community College, where he earned an honorable mention all- conference player and helped his team win the league championship. At Tarleton Hooten was awarded 2 letters from Lonn Reisman, and helped to lead his team of Texans to a record of 52-10.
Hooten was an assistant men’s basketball head coach for Tarleton State University for Lonn Reisman. While he was there during his time, the Texans recorded a score of 204-111. Hooten was back at Tarleton in the summer of 1993, after a stint as an assistant coach part-time in Weatherford Junior College. Hooten helped in all aspects that comprised the basketball team with a particular focus on scheduling and recruiting. Hooten’s efforts in recruiting were a major factor in Tarleton’s overall record of 82-16 in during his final three seasons with the Texans. In 2004 Tarleton had a record of 28-4 and won two titles: the Lone Star Conference North Division title as well as the LSC Championship. The Texans have won back-to-back North Division championships with a 29-4 mark in 2002-03 and an overall record of 25-8 in 2001-02. In Hooten’s 11 years as a player for the Texans nine players received first team All-LSC awards and five made it to All-America.
