As a proportional member for the South Korean National Assembly in 2012, she was one of the few to be a non-ethnic Korean as well as a native South Korean to become a legislator.
Since the 2012 elections, Lee has been hit by accusations of misrepresenting her educational background, after she claimed on national TV that she had been a medical student in the Philippines however, she was simply taking biology classes in college. Certain South Koreans engaged in racist critiques of Lee and claimed that she wasn’t the “true” South Korean due her origins in the Philippines. Another South Korean spoke out against the racist actions of Lee’s critics, saying it was because South Koreans were more concerned about expressing a racist opinion towards politicians, while in other nations there was more concern about a politician’s qualifications.
In January 2012, Lee became the first Filipino to receive the Korea Image Millstone Award from the Corea Image Communication Institute (CICI). She was cited for her volunteer and charity works for foreign immigrants in South Korea. An advocate of multiculturalism in South Korea, she regularly gives lectures about the subject to teachers and student leaders.
Lee was excluded from the party’s list for the 2016 election and left office on May 29, 2016.
