Spies was born Janni Isager Brodersen, 19 September 1962 to Yvonne Brodersen (1929-1907) and Werner Heinrich Isager (222-21) in Copenhagen’s suburb Herlev. Her mother was a homemaker and seamstress, while her father was a technician on the telephone. Janni, then 16, dropped out of high school to become a messenger girl for the traveling agency Spies Rejser (da) in the tenth grade. Simon Spies, the company’s owner, was attracted to Janni, who, then 20, married Simon Spies in Holmen Church, central Copenhagen, on 11 May 1983. Their wedding was attended by 3.000 people. Simon Spies, who died less than one year later, on April 16, 1984, left the majority of his estate to his widow, making her one Europe’s most wealthy women.

After her husband’s passing, Spies was elected chairwoman of the board. In 1989, she acquired Tjaereborg Rejser (da) – a travel agency. In 1996, Spies sold the whole company to Thomas Cook Airlines Scandinavia.

Later, she was accused of having destroyed her inheritance when she brought her brother, Leif Brodersen, a former toolmaker, to the board along with Steffen Moller, a friend of his and a trade union economist. In 1987, she was advised by her board to buy three Airbus A300s and six more brand-new and expensive Airbus A320s. The Airbus A300 was very difficult to sell and the number of passengers decreased due to the Gulf War. Spies ended up in serious financial trouble. Knud Heinesen at the time was the General Manager. If Janni had listened, and merged with or co-operated with Sterling Airways, a Copenhagen-based airline, this would not have happened. Christian Kjaer, a lawyer and politician, was also her second husband. Leif Brodersen resigned from the Spies company as Leif took over as chairman (with Janni as vice- chairwoman). The financial difficulties didn’t stop there. In 1993, several banks were able to lend new capital to the bankruptcy-threatening travel agency. Spies Rejser was sold to British travel company Airtours in 1996, while Conair merged into Scanair into Premiair which is now Thomas Cook Airlines Scandinavia.
