Janet Perlman is one of the most popular and richest Animator who was born on September 19, 1954 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Perlman, a film composer and ex-colleague of the NFB, founded Hulascope Studio in order to create animated projects for television. Penguins Behind Bars is a parody on the 1950s women in prison films. It was produced by Hulascope, the NFB, Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim and co-written and co-written jointly by Derek Lamb and Perlman.
Perlman has made several films and books featuring penguin characters. The short film The Tender Tale of Cinderella Penguin, which Perlman created, was also adapted into the children’s book Cinderella Penguin. The satirical graphic novel Penguins Behind Bars, by her friend and filmmaker Hulascope/NFB, was made into an animated short. It won four awards at the 2003 WorldFest- Houston International Film Festival, including the Platinum Award in Independent Short Subject. Although the short was aired on Cartoon Network’s late-night programming block Adult Swim in 2003, it was not made into a series. She also illustrated and wrote The Emperor Penguin’s new Clothes and The Penguin and the Pea.
Perlman’s short My Favourite Items That I Love was a hit at the 1994 Ottawa International Animation Festival. However, it proved to be confusing for the audience and the jury gave her a tongue in cheek “Best Bad Taste Award”. Annecy International Animated Film Festival awarded the film a “Most Horrible Music Award”.

Janet Laurie Perlman was born September 19, 1954. She is a Canadian animator, children’s book author, and illustrator. Her work includes The Tender Tale of Cinderella Penguin. It was nominated at the 54th Academy Awards for the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film and won a Parents Choice Award. To date, her 13 short films have won 60 awards. She was married to Derek Lamb, an animation producer. They formed Lamb-Perlman Productions after working together at the National Film Board of Canada during the 1980s. She is currently a partner at Hulascope Studio in Montreal. Perlman has created animation segments for Sesame Street, NOVA and other shows. She worked with Lamb to produce title sequences for Mystery!, based upon Edward Gorey’s artwork. Perlman was also one of the animators of R. O. Blechman’s adaptation, The Soldier’s Tale, for PBS’s Great Performances. She also taught animation at Concordia University, Rhode Island School of Design, and Harvard University. Although she and Lamb divorced, they remained creative partners and business partners until Lamb’s death in 2005.
Perlman’s NFB credits include The Tender Tale of Cinderella Penguin, Penguins Behind Bars and Lady Fishbourne’s Complete Guide to Better Table Manners. Perlman won first prize at the Ottawa International Film Festival in 1976. Invasion of the Space Lobsters was a coproduction of the NFB and the Canadian Labour Congress. This is a tongue-in-cheek view at doublespeak, bafflegab, and other bafflegab. She co-directed Why Me? (1977), and was an animator on The Hottest Show on Earth (1977).
