Janet married Ralph Howe in 1991. He was the national grass court 60 and over singles champion, Yale intercollegiate squash champion and North American singles squash champion.
1976: Martina Navratilova beat Newberry in the US Open’s first round 1-6, 6-4 and 6-3. Navratilova stated that she still considers that loss to be the most devastating of her career. She said, “I still consider it the worst in my career, at the least in the manner I responded to it on the court.” Newberry said that she had never seen someone so distraught before and helped Navratilova to calm down.
In 1984, Newberry achieved her best Grand Slam women’s doubles result, reaching the quarterfinals at Wimbledon partnering Renee Blount, losing to Kathy Jordan and Anne Smith 6–0, 6–1.
In 2004, she opened an antique shop in St Petersburg, Florida based on her collection of tennis memorabilia.
She was a member of the World Team Tennis league’s Boston Lobsters in 1974. She won the British Hardcourt Championship, Bournemouth in 1975. She reached the semifinals at the French Open and played doubles for the United States Federation Cup team, partnering Julie Heldman.
