Andrewartha didn’t plan to be an actress in her youth. Instead, she worked as a teacher of music. Andrewartha was working in a high-school and the principal asked her to put on a musical for the end of year with her class 10 students. She had no knowledge of theatre so she was asked to learn. Andrewartha enrolled in a part-time drama program and quit teaching after one year to pursue acting full-time. She completed a three-year drama course at the National Theatre, Melbourne. Andrewartha graduated in 1979 from the National Theatre.
Andrewartha played the role of Marion Stewart on ABC’s drama series Embassy in 1990. The role was that of the strong wife to an Australian ambassador. Andrewartha won the award for “Best Performance by an Artist in a Leading Role on Television Drama” at the 1991 Australian Film Institute Awards. Andrewartha did not return to the show’s final series despite her success. She resumed her work at the Melbourne Theatre Company. In 1991, she starred in Sunday Lunch, another Melbourne Theatre Company production. She also played the role of Jean, an investigative journalist, in Michael Gurr’s Sex Diary of an Infidel. Andrewartha was the Othello lead role in the 1992 season. She played the role of Breda, a barmaid in A Happy and Holy Occasion in 1993. Later she was cast as Lisa in The Garden of Granddaughters. Andrewartha was Caroline in Underwear, Perfume, and Crash Helmet, which debuted in 1994. She played Mary Margaret in Good Works during the 1995 season. She was also part of the Sydney Theatre Company’s collaboration Jerusalem in 1997 and Isola In Navigating in 1997. She was cast in Hotel Sorrento in 1998 and later, Liz in Rising Fish Prayer. Andrewartha directed the theatre production Neon Angel that year.
In 2017, Andrewartha joined the cast of Seven Types of Ambiguity in the recurring role of Kathleen.
Andrewartha worked with the Melbourne Theatre Company on numerous productions, including a part in the Australian version of Tom & Viv. Janet Andrewartha, an Australian theatre and television actress is Janet. Andrewartha started her career as a music teacher before enrolling in drama school. In 1979, she graduated and immediately began to secure television and theatre roles. Andrewartha has had some of her most memorable roles in Australian television series. These include Reb Kean in Prisoner and Marion Stewart in ABC’s drama series Embassy. Lyn Scully is a part of the soap opera Neighbours. She has been actively involved in theatre for over 40 years and has participated in many productions at Melbourne Theatre Company as well as Playbox Theatre Company.
Andrewartha performed her solo show, “Singing in the Raid”, in Melbourne in 1981. She performed her show at Melbourne’s National Theatre in 1982. Andrewartha’s first television role was in a 1983 episode Carson’s Law. In Fitzroy, she also played the role of Iris in Framework at the Universal Theatre. Andrewartha, who played Reb Kean, joined the cast in 1984 of Network 10’s drama series Prisoner. She starred in Prisoner and was also cast as Polly in The Three-penny Opera, a Victorian arts centre production. She starred in Russell Street Theatre productions in 1985. She was in Barry Dickins’ Reservoir by Night opposite Kevin Harrington. Andrewartha played the Prisoner character Reb in the series, but she was unable to finish the series.
In 1999, Andrewartha joined the cast of the soap opera Neighbours, playing the role of Lyn Scully. Andrewartha left the show in 2006. She immediately resumed working in theatre. In 2007, Andrewartha took a hiatus from acting while she helped care for her ill mother, until her death in January 2008. She also used the time off to help her daughter with her education. She later returned to Neighbours for a guest role in 2008 and once again in 2009 and remained with Neighbours for another two years. In 2011, Andrewartha decided to leave the series once again. She stated that she was only supposed to return in a guest role and ended up staying on. Andrewartha chose to leave to pursue other acting roles. The actress later reprised the role for further guest roles in 2016, 2017 and 2019.
