Atkinson was appointed the Fairfield University’s head swimming and diving coach in 2014. Prior to joining Fairfield, Atkinson was the assistant swimming coach of the UConn Huskies women’s swimming and diving teams at the University of Connecticut, Storrs. Before accepting the UConn job she was an assistant swimming coach at Wright State University, Dayton, Ohio. She was also the head coach for the Jamaican women’s team at the 2009 World Aquatics Championships.
Atkinson attended the University of Florida, Gainesville, Florida. She was a member of coach Gregg Troy’s Florida Gators swimming/dive team in National Collegiate Athletic Association competition (NCAA). Atkinson was a Gator swimmer who won three Southeastern Conference (SEC), championships in 500-yard freestyle, and once in the 1,650-yard-freestyle. She also received ten All- American honors. In 2005, she graduated from Florida with a bachelor’s degree in tourism management.

Janelle Anya Monique AtkinsonWignall, born 30 September 1982, nee Janelle Anya Monique Atkinson is a former competitive swimmer from Jamaica who won three silver medals in the 1999 Pan American Games.
Atkinson finished third in the 200-, 400 and 800 metre freestyle events at the 1999 Pan American Games. Atkinson represented Jamaica in the 2000 Summer Olympics, Sydney, Australia. She finished ninth in the 400-meter freestyle and ninth overall in the 800-metre freestyle. Atkinson was awarded a pair bronze medals in both the 400-metre freestyle (freestyle) and the 800-metre freestyle (freestyle) at the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester, England. At the 2004 Summer Olympics, Athens (Greece), she also participated in the 200-meter freestyle and the 400-metre freestyle. From 1997 to 2003, she was Jamaica’s Swimmer-of-the Year seven times consecutively. Contrary to popular belief Janelle is not related with Alia Atkinson, who is coincidentally also a Jamaican swimmer.
In 2017, Atkinson was named the head coach of the Stony Brook University swimming and diving team.
