Jan McFarlane was a Stoke-on-Trent native, Staffordshire, England, on 25th November 1964. Blythe Bridge High school, a secondary state school located in Blythe Bridge, near Stoke-on-Trent, was where she was educated. She graduated from the University of Sheffield in 1987 with a Bachelor of Medical Science degree (BMedSci). After graduating from the University of Sheffield, she worked as a speech therapist in the National Health Service. She lived in North Staffordshire. She was a specialist in teaching deaf children how to speak.

In 2004, McFarlane married Andrew Ridoutt. Her husband is a television cameraman.

In 1999, she moved to the Diocese of Norwich to take up the appointment of Diocesan Director of Communications. From 2001 to 2009, she was additionally chaplain to Graham James, Bishop of Norwich. She was selected as the next Archdeacon of Norwich in 2008. On 15 March 2009, she was installed as Archdeacon in Norwich Cathedral. Upon her appointment, she became one of only nine female archdeacons out of a total of 112 in the Church of England and the first in her diocese. From 2015, she also served as Warden of Readers for the diocese.

In February 2014, McFarlane was diagnosed with breast cancer. As part of her treatment, she underwent surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy. She shared her story with a local newspaper, the Eastern Daily Press, and “urged other cancer patients to not hide away from the disease”.

McFarlane was ordained as a deacon by the Church of England in 1993 at Lichfield Cathedral. She was the parish deacon for the Stafford Team Ministry of the Diocese in Lichfield from 1993 to 1994. In 1994, she was ordained a priest. She was one of the first women priests to be ordained by the Church of England in 1994. She remained in Stafford from 1994 to 1996 to continue her custodial work as part of the Stafford Team Ministry. She was a minor canon and chaplain at Ely Cathedral in Ely from 1996 to 1999.

Janet Elizabeth McFarlane, born 25 November 1964, is a British Church of England Bishop and former speech-language therapist. Since 2020, she has been Canon Residentiary at Lichfield Cathedral and Honorary Assistant Bishop in the Diocese. Prior to her consecration on 29 June 2016, she was a Bishop of Repton, the suffragan bishop in the Diocese of Derby. She also served as Acting Bishop for 31 August 2018 to February 2019.
