He moved to England with First Division side Port Vale on a three-month loan in November 1996, during the Swedish winter break. He played 11 league games in the 1996–97 season, and scored his first goal in the Football League at Vale Park on 19 January, in a 4–4 draw with Queens Park Rangers. In Sweden you play almost for fun, but here this is my work and it was important we stayed up.” However, he featured just eight times in the 1998–99 season before being released by new manager Brian Horton in February.

Hans Backe, a new manager, led Osters to the Division 1 Sodra title 1989. Jansson scored 14 goals in 26 games. In 1990, he scored five goals in 22 games and helped the team secure European football’s fourth-place finish. In 1991, he scored 13 goals in 31 games and scored a goal against Olympique Lyonnais at the UEFA Cup.
