Jan Fischer is one of the most popular and richest Politician who was born on January 2, 1951 in Prague, Czech Republic. Jan Fischer (Czech pronunciation, [‘jan’fISer]; born February 2, 1951) was a Czech politician. He was the Prime Minister of Czech Republic from May 2009 until July 2010. He also headed a temporary government. Later, he served as Minister of Finance in an interim government under Jiri Rusnok from July 2013 through January 2014.

He was a lifelong statistician and served as the president of Czech Statistical Office from April 2003 to April 2004.

He is a member of the Czech Statistical Society, the Scientific Council and Board of Trustees and a Scientific Board of the Jan Evangelista Purkyně University in Ústí nad Labem. Since April 2011, he is also a member of the board of Bruegel, the European think tank for international economics.

In February 2012, Jan Fischer announced his candidacy for the presidential election of January 2013. He was, according to polls, the favourite of the election, along with former Prime Minister Miloš Zeman. However, he lost in the first round to Zeman and the Foreign Minister Karel Schwarzenberg. Prior to the election, he was criticised for his former membership in the Communist Party.

Fischer joined the Federal Statistical Office immediately after he graduated. He was elected vice-chairman of the Federal Statistical Office in 1990. This position lasted until the fall of Czechoslovakia. In the meantime, he became the first vice president of the newly created Czech Statistical Office. He was responsible for counting the election results in the Czech Republic since the beginning of 1990s. It appeared that he was being groomed to succeed Edvard Outrata, the long-serving president who retired in August 1999. However, the Social-Democratic government brought in Marie Bohata, an outsider from academia. In September 2000, she fired Fischer and he was appointed Production Director at Taylor Nelson Sofres Factum. He participated in an International Monetary Fund mission in 2001, which explored the possibility of establishing a East Timor statistical bureau. He was the head of research institutes at Prague’s Faculty of Informatics and Statistics since March 2002. Bohata resigned in the wake of a scandal involving a large error in foreign trade balance. Fischer was elected president of Czech Statistical Office 24 April 2003.
