Jamie Redfern was the youngest of five siblings born to Sam and Mary Redfern in Liverpool on 9 April 1957. The family immigrated to Australia, where they settled in Melbourne. Evie Hayes, a US-born actor and singer, taught him how to sing. In 1964, he made his TV debut on Brian and the Juniors. This was a series of children’s variety-talent shows hosted by Brian Naylor. He stayed with the show until 1970. He was a guest on Happy Hammond’s 1968 colour television demonstration. Redfern was also a guest on Happening 1970 (1970) as well as Happening 1971 (1971), which were produced by Johnny Young and Kevin Lewis, a former pop star.
He won Most Popular Australian Album at the TV Week King of Pop Awards 1972 for When You Wish on a Star. Sitting on Top of the World (1972), his second studio album, also reached No. 16. It was a double-A sided single that he paired with his versions of “Rainbow on the River”,/”We’ll Meet Again”, which peaked at No. 8. He was 15 years old, making him the youngest Australian artist to achieve a top-10 hit. This was before Nikki Webster’s Strawberry Kisses in June 2001.
In January 1973 he briefly returned to Australia to record an album, Johnny Young, The Young Talent Team and Jamie Redfern Sing the Hits! (1973), he provided lead vocals for “Waltzing Matilda” and joined the then-current Young Talent Team on two tracks; his brother, Derek, sang lead for another track, “Puppy Love”. His next single, “Venus” (1973), was a cover version of Frankie Avalon’s song, which peaked at No. 8. For most of that year, Redfern was in the US for another touring stint with Liberace.
Redfern’s third studio album, Hitch a Ride on a Smile (1974), provided the title track as its lead single in March, which reached the top 30. Also that year he was dubbed the King of Pop at the TV Week King of Pop Awards for 1974. In the following year he provided a compilation album, Jamie Redfern’s Golden Hits. According to Australian music historian, Ian McFarlane, Redfern “slipped from view” during that year.
Redfern was cast as an original member of Young Talent Time’s Australian children’s variety program, Young Talent Time. The show was hosted by Young and produced by Lewis and Young. Hayes served as a judge on the program for a long time. Young recalls that he was nominated to the Young Talent Team without having to audition. He could sing the song by himself without accompaniment. He was a true boy soprano, with a powerful, strong voice. His father, Sam was his road manager, and his brother Derek was a member of the Young Talent Team.

Redfern was an original member of the Young Talent Time children’s variety program from April 1971 to early 1973. Ian McFarlane, an Australian musicologist, said that Redfern “possessed a powerful, mature voice which belied the tender age… He scored four Top 40 hits singles and sold over $1.3 million worth records.” The double-A sided covers for “Rainbow on the River”, “We’ll Meet Again”, and “Venus”, which both peaked at No. 8 on the GoSet national charts.

In mid-1972 Redfern toured the US with his mentor, Liberace. He was described by Australian Women’s Weekly’ s Dita Cobb as “a lovely contrast to the local product of his age. Americans adore him. He is so fresh and funny and unassuming and downright young. Nothing seems to have gone to his head.” Redfern remembered his early US performances, “lt was great… I was nervous at first. I got songs in the wrong order and the band was playing different music from what I was singing. But it soon straightened out, and I loved the excitement every night.”
