James Patrick Quirk (/’ kw e:r.k /; October 22, 1954) was an American former professional baseball player. He is also a coach. From 1975 to 1992, he was a Major League Baseball catcher. Quirk was part of the 1985 Kansas City Royals world champion team.
Quirk was involved with a benches-clearing incident on September 6, 2012 during a game between Washington Nationals and Cubs. Quirk was shouting from his dugout at Bo Porter, the Nationals’ third base coach. Porter left his position and approached Quirk. Both teams eventually marched onto the field, and Quirk was removed by Jerry Layne, umpire.
Quirk started his coaching career with the Kansas City Royals in 1994. He was the Bullpen coach for the first two years (1994-1995) and then he was the Bench Coach for the next 2 years (1996)-2001. Quirk was then named the Texas Rangers’ Bullpen Coach (baseball) in 2002. Quirk would then become the bench coach for Colorado Rockies between 2003 and 2008 under Clint Hurdle. Quirk was the bullpen coach of the Houston Astros from 2010 to 2011. Quirk was appointed the Chicago Cubs bench coach under Dale Sveum on November 29, 2011. He served there until 2013.

Quirk was a player for the Kansas City Royals as well as the Milwaukee Brewers, St. Louis Cardinals and Chicago White Sox. His career spanned the period 1975-1992.
Quirk scored the game-winning run on September 27, 1984 in the bottom ninth against the Minnesota Twins. This was Quirk’s only plate appearance for the Indians. It was also meaningless for Cleveland which was 6th in its division. Quirk’s seven-year-old team, the Kansas City Royals was still in the race for the American League West division title. The home run was however crucial. The Royals were two games ahead the Twins, with three left to play, thanks to Quirk’s homerun. The Royals won the division the following day. Quirk would play four more seasons in Kansas City and return to the Royals as a member of the Royals in 1985.
He was the Manager of the Lake Elsinore Storm and the San Antonio Missions in the San Diego Padres system before he was promoted to the El Paso Chihuahuas on June 17, 2015. Quirk managed the Kansas City Royals-affiliated Wilmington Blue Rocks from 2016 to 2017.
