McCunnie started his senior career at Dundee United as a youth player, and signed for them professionally in 1999. McCunnie was a regular right back at this stage in his career. In December 2000, United gave him his first team debut away to Hibernian. Alex Smith, despite McCunnie only being 17 years old, was impressed enough by his performances to keep him a regular first-team player throughout the remainder of the season. This helped the club climb out of relegation, and reach the Scottish Cup semi-final. McCunnie was able to sign a three-year extension with Tannadice, and also made his debut for Scotland’s under-21 team against Poland.
McCunnie was considered one of the top young players in Scottish football at that time. McCunnie was a regular player for Dundee United in the following two seasons, and he also became captain of the Scotland Under-21s. However, his form began to decline. McCunnie was soon informed by Ian McCall that he had been appointed Dundee United manager in 2003. He seemed unimpressed with the player’s attitude and offered to give up his services. In June 2003, the somewhat unsurprised player was transferred to Ross County in First Division, where Alex Smith, his mentor, was now manager. McCunnie played two seasons for Dingwall, where he was transformed from a defensive midfielder to a right back position. McCunnie was eager to return to higher levels of football and was looking to move to England. His contract with Ross County was set to expire in 2005. After a successful trial, he was widely expected to sign for Cardiff City. However, the move was not approved and Gillingham also failed. McCunnie signed for Dunfermline Athletic in August 2005, and was able to return to the top level of Scottish football. McCunnie has been a consistent first team player despite an injury that occurred in the early part of his Dunfermline career. This was due to an attack outside a Dundee nightclub.
After leaving Stirling Albion, McCunnie signed for Dundee-based junior club Broughty Athletic. He took over as the club’s caretaker manager in August 2017, following the resignation of previous manager Keith Gibson, then was appointed as interim for a second time in the same season after the resignation of Gibsons successor, Jim Finlayson in January 2018.
