To prepare for Rio Paralympics 2016, the family moved to Toronto for two-years. After being eliminated at the quarter-final stage by the Dutch women who had won bronze in London, the Canadians did not win a medal. In a Facebook post, Jewells expressed her grief. She wrote that she was heartbroken for the team and that she felt they deserved a better fate. We put our hearts and souls into training, game play, but today we failed. It is a terrible feeling to invest four years of your life in one thing only to have it all vanish in a single day. It’s hard to describe the feeling. Jewells started playing basketball when she was seven years old. At fourteen years old, Jewells was seriously injured in a car accident. She broke several ribs as well as her T12-L1 vertebrae. This forced her to spend nearly two years in hospital. To aid her recovery, her occupational therapist recommended that she play wheelchair basketball. Due to school and health, she had to take a break from 2007 to 2009. She didn’t return until 2010. She returned to Nova Scotia Community College in Sydney but had to take some time off for health reasons.
